The next update is coming soon, and it's apparently bringing a LOT of changes. The UI, character and building design are all getting radical revisions, and lots of Android users are not keen on them at all.
Arena tactics are going to change, though not sure how. The new hero, the Grizzly Reaper, is available for 7000 shards and opinion is divided on whether he's any good or not.
In short, may be best to hold off big shard/gem purchase until the update.
